New round of Israel–Lebanon talks expected in Washington; extension of ceasefire under consideration

Washington (Monitoring Desk) Another round of talks between Israel and Lebanon is expected today in Washington, where Lebanese officials are likely to present a request to extend the ceasefire for one month.

According to AFP, the current ceasefire is set to expire within days, raising fears of renewed escalation in the region.

A report by Al Jazeera, citing an unnamed Hezbollah official, said the group may be willing to accept indirect talks under US mediation as part of the ongoing negotiation process.

On the other hand, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar said there are no serious differences between Israel and Lebanon, but he blamed Hezbollah for obstructing peace and normal relations.

Reports further indicate that despite the temporary ceasefire, Israeli forces have continued operations in Lebanon, resulting in casualties. Among the reported incidents is the killing of Lebanese journalist Amal Khalil, while demolition of homes in some areas has also been reported.

According to Lebanese authorities, at least 2,400 people have been killed since the escalation began in March, keeping the situation in the region highly tense.
