QUETTA: The principal suspect in the acid attack on a female postgraduate (PG) doctor at Civil Hospital Quetta, Humayun Shah, has been killed during an exchange of fire with police, according to officials. The Provincial Home Minister was briefed on the operation and formally informed about the suspect’s death.
Large-Scale Search Operation Launched After Attack
Officials informed the Home Minister that immediately after the attack on the female doctor, law enforcement agencies launched an extensive search and combing operation across the district on the directives of Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti to apprehend the suspect.
Encounter Near Bus Terminal
According to preliminary reports, intelligence-based efforts led security personnel to trace Humayun Shah near the intercity bus terminal.
Officials stated:
“Police surrounded the suspect and ordered him to surrender. However, instead of complying, he allegedly opened indiscriminate fire on the police party.”
Police responded to the gunfire, and during the exchange, the suspect sustained critical injuries. He reportedly died before he could be successfully transferred for medical treatment.
Weapon and Evidence Recovered
Following the incident, police secured the area and called in forensic teams to collect evidence.
Authorities reported recovering:
- One pistol
- Four live rounds of ammunition
- Two spent shell casings
All evidence has been taken into custody in accordance with legal procedures, while investigators continue to examine other aspects of the case and any potential links or accomplices.
Government Reaffirms Zero-Tolerance Policy
The Provincial Home Minister praised the swift response of police and other law enforcement agencies, emphasizing the government's commitment to protecting citizens, particularly women and working professionals.
He directed the Inspector General of Police to ensure strict implementation of a zero-tolerance policy against heinous crimes such as acid attacks and stressed that individuals who take the law into their own hands will face decisive legal action.
