Battle of Lahore: Indian General Niranjan Prasad Flees, Abandoning His Jeep After Pakistan Army Counterattack

Islamabad (Web Desk) — During the 1965 war, the Indian Army suffered a major setback when Major General Niranjan Prasad, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Indian Army’s 15th Infantry Division, reportedly fled the battlefield after abandoning his jeep in the face of a determined counterattack by the Pakistan Army.

According to historical accounts, the Indian high command was thrown into turmoil following the failure of its night-time attack on Lahore. During this period, Major General Niranjan Prasad claimed that his troops were knocking at the gates of Lahore. Following this claim, the Indian high command ordered him to visit the frontline and verify the situation on the ground.

Unaware of the actual battlefield situation, Major General Niranjan Prasad reached the Wagah front near the BRB Canal, where he came under a strong Pakistani counterattack. Caught off guard and reportedly overwhelmed by the sudden assault, the Indian general abandoned his official jeep, bearing his three-star plate and flag, and fled the area to save his life.

The Pakistan Army reportedly seized the Indian general’s abandoned jeep, important maps and battle plans from the site. Major General Niranjan Prasad’s jeep is said to be preserved at an Army museum as a symbol of the Pakistan Army’s victory and the Indian military’s setback.
