QUETTA: Chief Minister Balochistan Mir Sarfraz Bugti has reaffirmed his government's commitment to expanding access to affordable and reliable electricity across the province, particularly in remote and underserved regions, emphasizing that sustainable energy solutions are essential for economic growth, investment, and improved living standards.
Chairing a high-level meeting at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, Bugti reviewed ongoing and proposed projects aimed at strengthening electricity generation and transmission infrastructure in Balochistan. The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Balochistan Shakeel Qadir Khan, Additional Chief Secretary (Development) Zahid Saleem, Secretary Energy Asfandyar Kakar, QESCO Chief Syed Yousaf Shah, and other senior officials.
Officials from the Energy Department briefed participants on plans to provide uninterrupted and cost-effective electricity to communities located in far-flung areas where traditional transmission networks are difficult and expensive to establish due to Balochistan’s vast geography.
The meeting was informed that mini power stations and off-grid energy projects are being considered as practical solutions for local electricity generation. Following the success of pilot projects, authorities are evaluating the feasibility of launching off-grid power initiatives in 17 districts of Balochistan to improve energy access for communities facing chronic electricity shortages or lacking connections to the national grid.
Officials also presented proposals to strengthen power transmission systems in areas already connected to the national network. Participants agreed to expedite the regulatory framework required for the timely implementation of energy projects.
Chief Minister Bugti directed relevant departments to maintain close coordination with the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) and other stakeholders regarding tariffs, legal requirements, and regulatory approvals.
He also instructed authorities to finalize a policy framework for on-grid power stations through comprehensive consultation with all stakeholders.
Addressing the meeting, Bugti said reliable electricity is critical for industrial development, economic expansion, and job creation. He stressed that access to energy is a fundamental requirement for improving living standards and ensuring that residents of remote areas benefit equally from development opportunities.
The chief minister noted that the provincial government is pursuing long-term solutions, including alternative energy resources and modern transmission systems, to address Balochistan’s energy challenges.
He added that the proposed projects would stimulate economic activity, attract private investment, create employment opportunities, and reduce the sense of deprivation in remote communities.
Reaffirming his government's commitment to public welfare, Bugti said providing essential services to every citizen is both a constitutional responsibility and a moral obligation, adding that ongoing energy sector reforms would support balanced and inclusive development throughout Balochistan.
