Mecca Defence Pact Is Defensive in Nature; Pakistan Will Ensure Saudi Arabia’s Security: DG ISPR
The Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the Pakistan Army’s media wing, has said in an interview with US broadcaster CNN that Pakistani armed forces have been serving in various capacities in Saudi Arabia for decades. He clarified that the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement is not an alliance that emerged suddenly.
He emphasised that the agreement’s primary objective is not to designate any country as a friend or enemy, but to ensure the defence of Saudi Arabia. He stated that Pakistan would defend Saudi Arabia at all costs.
The DG ISPR said the implementation and implications of the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement would be strictly defensive in nature. Decisions regarding troop deployments, procedures and operational use would ultimately rest with commanders on the ground.
In view of emerging security challenges in recent years, he described the agreement as a step towards strengthening regional stability. Under the pact, an attack on one member country would be considered an attack on all members, a provision intended to deter any destabilising actor from resorting to aggression.
Speaking about tensions between the United States and Iran, the DG ISPR said Pakistan had consistently played a key role in efforts to secure a ceasefire as a neutral and honest mediator. He added that these efforts would continue.
He said Pakistan seeks peace and stability in the region and has made it clear to all international partners that an expansion of the conflict would serve no one’s interests. He stressed that dialogue remains the only peaceful way to resolve disputes.
