India’s So-Called Military Modernisation: Modi Government Accused of Showcasing Cosmetic Measures
The Modi government is attempting to portray what critics describe as cosmetic measures under the banner of Indian Army modernisation and reforms as major achievements.
According to defence circles, presenting initiatives such as the controversial Agniveer recruitment scheme, domestic production of AK-203 rifles and the introduction of new camouflage uniforms as signs of military modernisation does not reflect ground realities.
According to a report by Indian broadcaster NDTV, more than 68 per cent of the Indian Army’s combat capability relies on outdated and ageing equipment, while the budget allocated to the military is severely inadequate to meet the demands of modern warfare.
Meanwhile, Indian forces reportedly suffered a major defeat at the hands of the Pakistan Army during the historic Marka-e-Haq. The Indian Air Force also continues to face serious aircraft accidents, with outdated technology, technical malfunctions and inadequate resources cited as contributing factors.
