Washington: The US Department of State has expressed serious concerns over the Modi government’s performance in preventing human trafficking, stating in its latest report that India has failed to meet the international standards required to combat the crime.

According to the report, weak oversight and a lack of attention by the Modi government have allowed Indian human traffickers to become a serious international concern. The US Department of State noted that India has prosecuted relatively few offenders involved in human trafficking and that conviction rates have remained extremely low, strengthening trafficking networks.

The US document further revealed that India lacks an active interministerial committee to address human trafficking and has not developed a comprehensive national action plan to combat the crime. These shortcomings, the report said, have significantly undermined institutional efforts.

According to international observers, criminal elements linked to India are increasingly associated with organised human trafficking networks, fake degree operations and terrorism-related activities on the global stage.
