Severe Human Rights Violations Under the Afghan Taliban Regime

Kabul: The repressive policies and extremist style of governance imposed by the Taliban administration in Afghanistan have placed both regional peace and the future of Afghan women at serious risk. These actions have triggered strong international criticism, while human rights organisations have sharply condemned the authorities in Kabul.

Position of Afghanistan’s Mission to the United Nations

According to a report by the Afghan newspaper Hasht-e Subh, Naseer Ahmad Faiq, head of Afghanistan’s mission to the United Nations, described the Taliban’s policies as a serious violation of the fundamental principles of international justice.

In a statement posted on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, he alleged:

“Women detained under the pretext of enforcing the veil and hijab are subjected to severe physical and psychological abuse by the Taliban. The Taliban leadership is fully aware of these actions by its personnel, and they are being carried out with its formal approval.”

Gender-Based Persecution and the Human Rights Crisis

Reports indicate that arbitrary arrests of women, gender-based violence and forced marriages in Afghanistan have raised serious concerns about the Taliban’s conduct.

Commenting on the situation, United Nations Special Rapporteur Richard Bennett said the Taliban authorities continue to engage in inhumane and oppressive practices, including persecution on the basis of gender.
