Following the directives of the national and military leadership, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) chaired a high-level National Monsoon Conference at its headquarters. The forum reviewed the state of readiness for the 2026 monsoon season, focusing on multi-hazard mitigation and inter-agency coordination.
NEOC Disaster Warning (DEW-3): Key Threats
The National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) has identified several concurrent risks for the period of June to September:
Extreme Weather in the North: Simultaneous threats of GLOF (Glacial Lake Outburst Floods), landslides, and flash floods due to heavy rains and rapid snowmelt.
Heatwaves in the South: Despite the monsoon's arrival, southern and central plains are expected to face above-average temperatures and intense heatwaves.
Rainfall Pattern: Forecasts suggest an unbalanced monsoon with higher intensity in northern regions compared to the south.
Directives from Chairman NDMA
Chairman NDMA, Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik, emphasized that timely early warnings are indispensable for saving lives. He directed all stakeholders to:
Ensure the availability of rescue machinery and relief stocks in vulnerable zones.
Mobilize local volunteers and civil society at the district level for rapid response.
Launch aggressive public awareness campaigns, particularly for tourists in northern areas.
Unified Response Strategy
Representatives from PDMAs, PMD, NHA, WAPDA, and the Armed Forces reaffirmed their commitment to a unified national strategy. The conference concluded with a rigorous review of evacuation plans, communication systems, and the protection of critical infrastructure across the country.
