Maritime Sector Revolution: Remarkable Gains from Prime Minister’s Task Force
Under the Prime Minister’s Task Force for Maritime Reforms, Pakistan’s maritime sector is rapidly moving toward self-reliance. With modern port systems, joint ventures and digital customs procedures, maritime trade and port maintenance are being transformed in line with international standards for the first time in the country’s history.
NDMS: Beginning of Self-Reliance in Dredging
At the centre of this historic development is the National Dredging and Marine Services (NDMS) joint venture. The project has been established through collaboration among the National Logistics Cell (NLC), Karachi Port Trust (KPT), Port Qasim and Gwadar Port Authority.
Through this joint venture, Pakistan is becoming locally self-reliant for the first time in the highly technical field of port dredging and maintenance, reducing dependence on foreign expertise and services.
Improvements in Cargo and Energy Supply Chains
In terms of infrastructure upgrades, the Single Point Mooring (SPM) project is playing a crucial role in strengthening the country’s energy supply chain.
At the same time, a new freight corridor has been established at Karachi Port in collaboration with globally renowned company DP World, making cargo movement faster and more convenient.
Digital Customs and a Transparent Trade System
Revolutionary changes have also been introduced in the customs department to connect the modern port system with transparent trade policies. The implementation of digital enforcement and a risk-based targeting system has improved transparency and efficiency in the customs clearance process.
In addition, other digital reforms, including IBA Customs Licensing, have begun producing highly positive results, helping strengthen confidence among the business and trading community.
