Washington / New Delhi: The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has reportedly taken a strong position over rising violence and religious intolerance against minorities in India, calling for restrictions against the Hindu nationalist organization Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

According to a report by TRT World, the development comes ahead of an expected visit to the United States by the RSS chief and has drawn renewed international attention to concerns surrounding India’s religious-freedom record.

USCIRF Commissioner Dr. Asif Mahmood said extremist groups operating in India have continued to target Muslims and other minorities, arguing that Washington should consider stronger measures to address such concerns.

The USCIRF’s 2026 reporting has reportedly recommended action against RSS and India’s intelligence agency, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). International human-rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, have also raised concerns over alleged discrimination and abuses against religious minorities in India.

Indian social activist Asif Mujtaba has argued that Muslims face heightened risks in the current environment. Former RSS member Yashwant Shinde has also made allegations concerning extremist activities associated with the organization.
