Contrary to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s so-called claims of a “Shining India,” millions of young people across the country are reportedly caught in a severe education crisis and the quagmire of unemployment.

According to a report published by Indian magazine The Wire, data from an Indian government survey has exposed serious shortcomings in the Modi government’s economic policies. The report revealed that in 250 districts across India, around 25 percent of young people lack access to basic education and decent employment opportunities.

According to the report’s figures, employment opportunities are extremely limited even for highly educated young people. Only 7 percent of graduates in India were able to secure employment within one year, while 93 percent of those holding higher degrees reportedly failed to find jobs.

Renowned economic researcher Professor Sonalde Desai has also expressed deep concern over the rapidly rising unemployment situation across India during the Modi government’s tenure, describing the situation as serious.

Meanwhile, citing data from an Indian think tank, the report said that around 87 million young people between the ages of 15 and 29 in India have neither access to education nor employment opportunities.

Economists and analysts reportedly believe that poor priorities and political slogans have placed the bright future of India’s youth at the expense of Modi’s electoral politics.
