Modi Government Alarmed by the Rise of the Cockroach Janata Party Movement

Forced Hospitalisation of Sonam Wangchuk and Attack on Abhijit Dipke Intensify Protests

New Delhi — A youth-led social media movement called the “Cockroach Janata Party,” launched against alleged examination irregularities and fraud in India, has evolved into a powerful political campaign, placing the Modi government under increasing pressure.

According to a report by international news outlet Al Jazeera, nationwide protests intensified after prominent human rights and environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk was forcibly transferred to a hospital during his hunger strike.

Attack on Cockroach Janata Party Founder and Opposition Unity

Movement founder Abhijit Dipke began a hunger strike in solidarity with Sonam Wangchuk, after which unidentified individuals threw ink at him. The incident has further fuelled public anger.

Medical Report Withheld: Sonam Wangchuk’s wife told the media and posted on social media that the government was not providing them with his medical report and that the family had no confidence in the government hospital.

Strong Opposition Reaction: According to The Indian Express, Indian opposition parties united in strongly criticising the Modi government over its treatment of Sonam Wangchuk.

From an Online Joke to a Political Struggle

According to British analyst Hannah Ellis-Petersen, the Cockroach Janata Party began as an online joke and satirical campaign but has now become a serious challenge to India’s right-wing government.

Political and defence analysts say the enthusiasm of young people and the opposition’s united position indicate that resistance to what they describe as the Modi government’s authoritarian measures is steadily growing.
