Minorities Face Growing Persecution in BJP-Ruled Maharashtra

RSS ideological dominance exposes the reality of so-called secular India; Muslims face economic boycotts while Christians endure state pressure

Mumbai: The expanding shadow of Hindutva extremism in India has now become a question of survival for religious minorities. The BJP-ruled state of Maharashtra has emerged as a stronghold of the ideology of the Hindu extremist organisation Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, where incidents of violence against Muslims and Christians, attacks on places of worship, and the targeting of their properties have risen to alarming levels.

Organised Economic Boycott of Muslims in Sangli

According to a report published by the Indian journal Hindustan Gazette, Muslims living in Arla village in Maharashtra’s Sangli district are facing severe economic and social hardship.

Incident: An anti-Muslim hate campaign was launched during a Hindutva event held on June 9.

Impact: Following the gathering, villagers, under pressure from extremist elements, either completely ended or severely restricted all commercial dealings and business relations with local Muslims. As a result, Muslim families are now being pushed towards hunger and deprivation.

State Machinery Used Against Christian Missionaries

The Christian community is also being systematically marginalised. According to the prominent Indian newspaper The Indian Express, Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule has announced that all land and properties owned by Christian missionary organisations in the state will be subjected to strict scrutiny.

The decision came merely one week after a Christian delegation formally approached Mumbai Police seeking protection for their lives and properties following continued threats from extremist groups.

The Idea of “Secular India” Is Collapsing

Prominent Indian human rights activist Harsh Mander expressed deep concern over the situation, saying that the ultimate objective of the BJP and RSS is to create an India where Muslims and Christians are no longer treated as equal citizens but are forced to live as second-class citizens.
