Indian Democracy Faces Crisis as International Media Criticises Modi Government

International media coverage has raised questions about India’s democratic claims amid allegations of electoral manipulation and repressive measures by the Modi government. According to a report by the American magazine TIME, the removal of millions of citizens’ names from voter lists has sparked widespread public anger across India, with thousands taking to the streets to protest against the Modi government.

The American magazine reportedly stated that nationwide protests had erupted after the names of approximately 130 million voters were mysteriously removed from electoral rolls. Protesters accused Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of favouring Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), demanding his immediate resignation.

According to the report, Indian authorities responded to the public demonstrations with a crackdown, detaining several young leaders in the capital, New Delhi.

Meanwhile, protesters alleged that the Modi government was depriving millions of citizens of their right to vote to protect its political interests. They maintained that restrictions on fundamental democratic freedoms would not silence the voices of the younger generation.
