Contrary to the Modi government’s claims of democracy, journalism in India is facing increasing restrictions, censorship and state pressure.
According to the international publication The New York Times:
- 21 major media organisations in India have described the new privacy law as a threat to investigative journalism and demanded its repeal.
- Press freedom has come under growing pressure during Modi’s tenure, with an increase in legal pressure on journalists, attacks against them and online harassment, The New York Times reported.
- The Digital News Publishers Association has described the Modi government’s new law as a framework that could effectively silence journalism, according to The New York Times.
According to an article published by foreign news outlet UA News:
- The arrest of 43 journalists within two days has exposed what the article describes as the Modi government’s repressive approach.
According to Reporters Without Borders (RSF):
- India’s 157th position in the World Press Freedom Index reflects the deteriorating state of press freedom in the country.
