Global Reports Expose Terrorism Under Afghan Taliban Rule
Afghanistan becomes a safe haven for Al-Qaeda-linked groups; global bodies detail severe restrictions on women
Kabul: The Afghan Taliban regime’s alleged support for terrorism and extremism to prolong its rule has once again come under scrutiny at international forums. According to international defence and research reports, the Taliban’s hard-line laws and policies have created serious security challenges not only for neighbouring countries but for the entire region.
Al-Qaeda’s Resurgence and Terrorist Training Centres
According to a new report issued by the US-based research platform Global Conflict Tracker, the Afghan Taliban have established an unchecked and unilateral hold over the country under an extremely rigid legal system.
Recruitment of terrorists: The report states that global militant organisations such as Al-Qaeda have turned Afghanistan into a major centre for their activities, new recruitment and military training.
International network: Evidence is also emerging that militants are being trained in these safe havens and then sent abroad. As a result, the Afghan people themselves continue to live under the constant threat of terrorist attacks.
Denial of Women’s Basic Rights and Social Exclusion
Alongside the security crisis, the human rights situation in the country, particularly for women, has deteriorated sharply. According to a report by German media network DW, Afghan women have been almost completely excluded from public life under Taliban rule.
Under official directives, girls have been barred from secondary and higher education and are permitted to study only at the primary level. Women are also not allowed to travel without a mahram, or male relative.
Growing International Consensus
According to observers, major countries and international security institutions are increasingly united in condemning the Afghan Taliban over the alleged support of terrorist groups and the promotion of extremism. This growing consensus supports the position Pakistan has long presented internationally in the interest of regional peace.
