Global Crackdown Intensifies Against Undocumented Afghan Migrants

Ankara — Undocumented Afghan migrants and expanding human smuggling networks have emerged as a growing security concern across Europe and the Middle East. Governments have intensified enforcement against Afghan nationals residing without legal documentation, with the latest operations resulting in the detention of dozens of Afghans in Türkiye and Poland.

According to international media reports, many countries are tightening border security and strictly enforcing immigration laws against individuals staying or entering without valid legal documents.

Major Police Operation in Türkiye's Edirne

According to Afghanistan International, Turkish authorities arrested 24 Afghan nationals who were attempting to travel illegally through Türkiye toward Europe.

Key developments include:

• Women and Children Detained: Among those detained in the border city of Edirne were 7 women and 6 children.
• Human Smuggler Arrested: Turkish police also arrested a bus driver accused of transporting the migrants illegally toward the border and seized the vehicle.
• Migration Statistics: Official figures from Türkiye's Directorate of Migration Management show that 16,436 Afghan nationals without valid residence permits were detained during the first five months of this year.

Operations in Poland and Reasons Behind Irregular Migration

Polish border authorities also detained 15 Afghan nationals two days earlier for allegedly entering the country without valid travel documents after crossing the border illegally.

According to international media analyses, including reports by the BBC, many Afghans continue to leave the country through irregular migration routes due to economic hardship, insecurity, restrictions on fundamental rights, and concerns about the situation under the Taliban administration. These migration flows continue to present humanitarian and border management challenges for many countries.
