Global Crackdown Intensifies Against Afghan Nationals Involved in Illegal Activities

Ankara / Kabul — Afghan migrants residing on illegal documents and those allegedly involved in serious crimes have become a major administrative and security challenge for host countries around the world. As part of efforts to curb violations of international borders and illegal activities, several countries, including Türkiye, have intensified crackdowns, with record numbers of Afghan nationals being detained and forcibly deported.

Large-Scale Operation Against Illegal Migrants in Türkiye

According to a report published by Afghan media outlet Khaama Press, Turkish security agencies conducted an extensive search and enforcement campaign during the first eight months of this year, from January to August. During this period, nearly 95,000 illegal migrants were detained across the country, with Afghan nationals accounting for the largest proportion.

Türkiye’s Crackdown and United Nations Data

Large-scale arrests: Turkish authorities arrested more than 25,000 Afghan nationals residing illegally in the country during the first eight months of this year due to the absence of valid legal documentation.

United Nations data: According to institutional data from the United Nations, more than 13,000 undocumented Afghan nationals were safely deported from Türkiye during the first five months of 2026.

Identification of detainees: The Turkish Ministry of Interior confirmed that the detained migrants did not possess valid visas, passports or residence permits.

Severe Economic Crisis and Security Concerns of Host Countries

Defence and diplomatic affairs experts say that the loss of employment, poverty and deteriorating economic conditions under the Taliban government are forcing thousands of Afghan citizens to choose illegal routes to flee abroad.

Experts have warned that the arrival of organized criminal elements under the cover of illegal migration has created serious risks to law and order, social stability and internal security in the region and host countries.
