According to a report by The Hindu, the Bangladeshi government has made it clear that resolving the pending issue of extraditing former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other fugitives is essential before Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s visit to New Delhi.

Dhaka Calls on New Delhi to Create a Favorable Environment

A spokesperson for Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that New Delhi must create an appropriate and favorable environment for confidence-building before high-level diplomatic visits take place. Dhaka has formally urged India to expedite the legal extradition process for Sheikh Hasina and other fugitives wanted in connection with crimes against humanity.

Shift in Diplomatic Priorities and Foreign Policy

According to The Hindu, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has shifted Bangladesh’s foreign-policy priorities since assuming office, moving away from traditional diplomatic patterns.

Regional and International Visits: During his initial foreign engagements, he prioritized visits to Malaysia and China instead of traveling to New Delhi.

Court Verdict and Legal Pressure: Following a Bangladeshi court’s conviction of Sheikh Hasina in cases involving crimes against humanity, her continued presence in India has become a major source of diplomatic friction between the two countries.

International relations experts believe that the unresolved issue of Sheikh Hasina’s extradition remains one of the biggest obstacles to restoring relations between Bangladesh and India.
