Airspace Closure and Safety Concerns: Air India Faces Deepening Crisis, Modi Government’s Claims Questioned

New Delhi / London (Monitoring Desk) — Air India is facing mounting operational and financial challenges amid Pakistan’s airspace restrictions and continuing concerns over aviation safety, raising fresh questions about the Indian government’s claims of progress in the aviation sector.

According to the British newspaper The Independent, Air India has faced increasing difficulty in restoring passenger confidence, particularly among British and international travelers, following the deadly aviation accident in 2025. Safety concerns and negative publicity have contributed to growing uncertainty among passengers.

Historic Decline in Passenger Numbers

Data released by British aviation analytics company Cirium indicates that passengers on India–UK routes are increasingly choosing alternative airlines instead of Air India.

August and September 2025: Passenger numbers reportedly declined by 11 percent and 19 percent, respectively, in the months following the accident.

April 2026: Air India recorded a reported 27 percent decline in passenger volumes compared with April 2025.
