Taliban Movements Along Wakhan Corridor: China Issues Warning

Following the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan, growing concerns over cross-border incursions and terrorism have put neighbouring countries in the region on high alert.

According to the Afghan publication Afghanistan International, Afghan Taliban personnel allegedly attempted to enter Chinese territory through the Wakhan Corridor. Chinese border authorities reportedly responded firmly and issued a formal warning to the Taliban, instructing them to leave the area immediately.

According to the report, China has tightened security measures along its Afghan border since the Taliban took power. These measures include installing barbed-wire fencing and advanced surveillance cameras at border crossings. Amid concerns over possible infiltration by terrorist elements, China has kept the strategically important Wakhan border route adjoining Afghanistan closed.

The publication further reported that concerns over extremism originating from Afghan territory and illegal cross-border movement have prompted other neighbouring countries in the region to impose stringent security measures along their respective borders.
