Afghan Journalists Forced Into Exile as Press Freedom Declines Under Taliban Rule

Kabul (Web Desk): Press freedom in Afghanistan has faced a severe decline since the Taliban returned to power, with journalists increasingly facing restrictions, threats, and censorship. According to a report by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), hundreds of Afghan journalists have been forced to leave their country and seek refuge abroad since 2021.

The report states that at least 677 Afghan journalists are currently living in exile across 28 countries due to security concerns and pressure on independent media. RSF data shows that 183 journalists left Afghanistan in 2022, while another 82 journalists were forced into exile during 2025.

According to the organization, Afghan media workers are left with limited choices: abandoning journalism, leaving the country, or facing detention and legal action. The report also notes that at least five journalists remain in Taliban custody.

RSF's South Asia Desk Head, Celia Mercier, stated that Afghanistan's media sector is facing systematic pressure, strict restrictions, and growing control over journalistic activities. Analysts believe the situation highlights the difficult conditions faced by journalists attempting to report independently inside Afghanistan.
