Taliban Policies and Rights Abuses Leave Afghanistan Globally Isolated

Islamabad (Web Desk) — Afghanistan has become increasingly isolated at the international level due to the Afghan Taliban’s extremist policies, violent actions, and continued violations of human rights.

Since the Taliban returned to power, no country has formally recognised their government, while US policymakers have reportedly removed Afghanistan from their list of key foreign-policy priorities.

Key Revelations in The Diplomat Report

According to a recent report published by the international magazine The Diplomat, Washington has continued to refuse formal recognition of the Taliban regime as Afghanistan’s legitimate government since the US withdrawal in 2021.

Key Findings of the Report

Suspension of Diplomatic Operations: The US Embassy in Kabul has remained completely closed since August 31, 2021.

Termination of Financial Assistance: The US administration suspended all financial and humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan from the middle of 2025.

Suspension of Visa Services: The issuance of all categories of US visas for Afghan citizens, including Special Immigrant Visas, has been halted.

Hostage Diplomacy and Exclusion from US Security Strategy

According to the report, Washington has described the Taliban’s detention of American citizens as “hostage diplomacy.”

Consequently, Afghanistan has reportedly been excluded entirely from both the US National Security Strategy 2025 and the National Defense Strategy 2026.

Failed-State Status: Global policymakers increasingly view Afghanistan as a failed state and an issue belonging to the past.

US Ambassador’s Firm Position: US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz said that Washington could not establish a relationship based on trust with a group that detains innocent Americans and disregards the fundamental rights of its own people.
