Obesity may be a major cause of rising cancer cases among young people, study reveals

Islamabad (Health Desk) A new study has revealed that obesity may be an important factor behind the increasing number of cancer cases in individuals under the age of 50.

Although experts say the issue is not yet fully clear and further research is needed, scientists believe that excess body weight or obesity can increase cancer risk, possibly due to higher insulin levels in the body and increased inflammation.

Researchers have recently expressed concern over the rising trend of cancer cases among younger individuals, including diseases such as bowel and ovarian cancer.

In 2023, around 31,000 cancer cases were reported in England among people aged 20 to 49, meaning about one in every 1,000 individuals was affected.

In comparison, among people aged 50 to 79, the number was significantly higher at 244,000 cases, which translates to roughly one in every 100 individuals.

Among younger age groups, breast cancer was the most commonly reported, with 8,500 cases, followed by 3,000 cases of bowel cancer and 2,800 cases of skin cancer (melanoma).
