Pakistan Reaches an Eight-Year High Following IMF Reforms, Fiscal Discipline and Recovery in Foreign Exchange Reserves

Islamabad: International credit rating agency S&P Global has upgraded Pakistan’s long-term sovereign credit rating from ‘B-’ to ‘B’, while maintaining a stable economic outlook.

The positive development has lifted Pakistan’s credit standing to its highest level in nearly eight years. Pakistan was previously rated in the ‘B’ category between October 31, 2016, and February 3, 2019.

Key Reasons Behind the Rating Upgrade

According to S&P Global’s report, the upgrade was made possible by several fundamental factors:

Improved Institutional Capacity: Continued implementation of major economic and structural reforms under the International Monetary Fund programme.

Fiscal Stability: A significant reduction in the fiscal deficit through expansion of the tax base and greater discipline in government expenditure.

Growth in Foreign Exchange Reserves: A sustained improvement in foreign currency reserves, which has considerably reduced pressure related to external payments.

Economic Stability and Global Confidence

“The improvement in Pakistan’s rating reflects greater institutional stability and the successful implementation of reforms under the IMF programme, which have strengthened the country’s financial indicators.”
— S&P Global

Economic experts believe that the rating upgrade will help restore Pakistan’s credibility in global financial markets, encourage foreign investment and facilitate external financing agreements.
