Historic Diplomatic Breakthrough: US and Iran Sign “Islamabad Accord” Through Pakistan’s Mediation

Islamabad: In a major diplomatic development aimed at preventing a wider regional and economic crisis, the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran have electronically signed a historic “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)” following successful mediation efforts by Pakistan.

The presidents of both countries signed the agreement, while Pakistan formally endorsed the document in its role as mediator.

The agreement has come into effect immediately. Under its first phase, Iran has agreed to reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz for international shipping, while the United States has agreed to immediately end its naval blockade imposed on Iran.

Formal Ceremony in Switzerland and Launch of Technical Talks

The high-level agreement reflects the commitment of both parties to resolving disputes through diplomacy and dialogue. Pakistan, with the cooperation of the brotherly state of Qatar, will host an official ceremony in Switzerland on June 19, 2026, to commemorate the agreement and formally launch technical-level negotiations between the two sides.

Immediate Outcomes of the Islamabad Accord

  • Strait of Hormuz: Iran to immediately reopen the vital waterway to facilitate global trade and supply chains.
  • End of Naval Blockade: The United States to immediately lift its naval restrictions on Iran.
  • Future Roadmap: Continuous technical negotiations to be held in Switzerland under the facilitation of Pakistan and Qatar.

Tribute to the Political Wisdom of US and Iranian Leadership

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in an official statement, praised US President Donald J. Trump for prioritizing diplomacy and a peaceful resolution, saying the decision helped avert potentially devastating consequences for the region.

He also commended members of the US negotiating team, including J.D. Vance, Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, for their efforts throughout the process.

On the Iranian side, the Prime Minister expressed appreciation for the wisdom and statesmanship of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Syed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian. He also acknowledged the constructive role played by Iranian negotiators Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Abbas Araghchi, and Eskandar Momeni.

Key Role of Friendly Nations and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir

The Prime Minister paid special tribute to the leadership of Qatar for its sincere diplomatic efforts, while also acknowledging the valuable support provided by Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Egypt.

He particularly highlighted the role of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, stating that his tireless efforts, dedication, and diplomatic engagement played a crucial role in achieving this historic breakthrough and promoting regional stability.

The Prime Minister expressed hope that the memorandum would serve as a lasting foundation for mutual respect, cooperation, and shared prosperity across the region.
