Islamabad (Health Desk) Reports of the spread of the dangerous Hantavirus on a luxury cruise ship traveling from Argentina to South Africa, along with deaths and infected cases, have raised global concern. According to the International Health Organization, one confirmed and five suspected cases have been reported on board the ship, while the deaths of 3 passengers have also been confirmed. A 69-year-old British citizen infected with the virus is said to be in critical condition and has been placed in intensive care at a hospital in Johannesburg. The incident occurred on the MV Hondius cruise ship, which was on a long voyage and departed from Ushuaia, Argentina on 20 March. The ship was initially scheduled to arrive in Cape Verde on 4 May. According to experts, Hantavirus is usually transmitted to humans through contact with rodent urine or droppings and can cause severe respiratory illness. Although human-to-human transmission is rare, the current situation has caused panic among passengers and crew. The cruise ship had around 170 passengers, 57 crew members and a small medical team on board, making it difficult to manage the emergency situation. The UK Foreign Office has also confirmed that it is monitoring the situation and taking steps to assist its citizens.
