WFP and ACT International Partnership Promotes Productive Use of School Meal Program Waste

Organic Waste from School Meal Program to Improve Soil Fertility

During a session chaired by Dr. Asim Kakar, Director General of the Agriculture Research Department Balochistan, Khurshid Iqbal, Team Leader of the World Food Programme (WFP), provided participants with a detailed briefing on recycling organic waste generated through the School Meal Program.

Technical support for the training was provided by WFP Consultant Asif Zehri, Abdul Rasool of ACT International, and Agriculture Chemist Dr. Hidayatullah Kakar, who guided participants on the scientific and practical methods of compost production.

Waste Reduction: Household waste is being transformed from an environmental burden into a valuable economic resource.

Soil Fertility: Organic fertilizer serves as an effective tool for chemical-free sustainable agriculture, improving soil health and increasing crop productivity.

Community Ambassadors: Women receiving the training will act as ambassadors of environmentally friendly waste management practices within their communities.

Practical Demonstration of Windrow Composting Technique at ARI Quetta

During the training session, participants visited the composting plant established at ARI Quetta, where they observed the Windrow Composting Technique, a method that converts organic waste into fertilizer through controlled decomposition at specific temperatures.

Women were trained in all stages of the process, including:

  • Waste segregation
  • Moisture management
  • Compost preparation
  • Packaging of organic fertilizer

Participants’ Response: The women appreciated the green initiative and stated that the campaign to convert kitchen waste into high-quality organic fertilizer would prove to be a milestone for agricultural development and environmental cleanliness in Balochistan.
