Support for New Administrative Units, Citizens Urge Separate Province for DI Khan
Calls for the creation of new administrative units are gaining momentum across Pakistan, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where citizens of southern KP have formally demanded that Dera Ismail Khan be made a separate province.
Residents of Dera Ismail Khan say establishing a new province has become necessary to ensure the local provision of education, healthcare and other basic services. They said residents currently have to undertake long and difficult journeys to Peshawar for government matters and essential services, and that a separate province could help address these difficulties on a permanent basis.
The citizens argued that it is difficult for a single chief minister to effectively oversee the administrative affairs of a province with such a large geographical area and population. They proposed creating a separate province comprising Dera Ismail Khan, Tank and South Waziristan, saying local leadership and a chief minister based in the region would be better positioned to understand and address local issues.
The citizens further said that the creation of new administrative units and devolution of authority to lower levels could also help address the region’s security challenges in a more effective and organized manner.
