September 6, 1965: Pakistan Army Foils Indian Offensive Against Lahore
On the sixth day of the full-scale war imposed on Pakistan by Indian Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, India launched a cowardly attack on Lahore under the cover of darkness on September 6, 1965. However, the Pakistan Army responded with such a powerful counterattack that the Indian forces were forced to retreat.
Addressing the nation, Field Marshal Muhammad Ayub Khan delivered a historic speech and sent a clear message to the enemy. Informing the nation about the state of war, he stated that Pakistan’s brave soldiers had advanced to destroy the enemy.
“Our resolve has never weakened. The Armed Forces of Pakistan will deal with the enemy with an iron hand and write a new chapter of courage and bravery.” — Field Marshal Muhammad Ayub Khan
The Indian aggression also triggered concern within the international community, prompting British Prime Minister Harold Wilson to take immediate notice and call on India to agree to a ceasefire.
Lahore Front: A Graveyard of Indian Tanks
Demonstrating superior military strategy, the Pakistan Army thwarted India’s ambitions to capture Lahore. Timely and effective action by Pakistani forces on the Wagah and Bedian fronts forced the Indian Army to retreat.
Heavy Losses in Men and Equipment: Dozens of Indian tanks, heavy artillery pieces and other military equipment were destroyed on the Lahore front.
Battle of Jassar: During intense fighting at Jassar, Pakistan Army troops cleared the southern bank of the River Ravi of Indian control. More than 800 bodies of enemy troops were reportedly left on the battlefield.
Prisoners of War: During these clashes, the Pakistan Army captured a large number of Indian soldiers as prisoners of war.
PAF Strikes Pathankot and Victories in Chhamb
In the skies, the “Shaheens” of the Pakistan Air Force established their dominance. In a highly successful and devastating attack on Pathankot airbase, the Pakistan Air Force reportedly destroyed 22 Indian fighter aircraft on the ground.
On the ground front, the Indian Army also suffered a major defeat in the Chhamb area. Pakistan Army troops captured 35 Indian soldiers and seized six 25-pounder field guns belonging to the enemy.
An Unbreakable Nation Standing Shoulder to Shoulder
The 1965 war was not fought only along the borders; the entire nation emerged as an unbreakable wall of unity. The enthusiasm of the people was remarkable, as thousands of unarmed civilians stood alongside the soldiers and raised resounding slogans to boost the morale of the security forces.
The unity and solidarity demonstrated by the nation sent a powerful message that a united people cannot easily be defeated by any force.
