Prime Minister’s Task Force for Maritime Reforms: Major Progress in Modernizing Pakistani Ports

Islamabad: Significant progress has been made under the Prime Minister’s Task Force for Maritime Reforms toward comprehensively upgrading Pakistan’s ports, customs stations and off-dock terminals to bring the country’s trade infrastructure in line with international standards.

Modern Technology, Transparent Inspections and 24-Hour Port Operations

In collaboration with the Task Force, the National Logistics Cell (NLC) and other relevant institutions, a framework is being developed to make the port system paperless, automated and secure, while accelerating cargo clearance.

Key Technical and Administrative Measures

• 24-hour round-the-clock operations: Inspection facilities are being upgraded under customs regulations to enable continuous clearance services.
• Modern scanning and security infrastructure: Portable weighing scales, regular calibration, advanced scanners and comprehensive CCTV surveillance are being introduced for cargo inspection.
• Protection of high-value cargo: High-value cargo areas are being expanded, with dedicated security protocols to safeguard valuable shipments.
• Automated monitoring system: A regulatory monitoring system is being developed for annual and surprise inspections of off-dock terminals and port warehouses.

International-Standard Training Institute and Global Competitiveness

As part of efforts to achieve long-term self-reliance in the maritime sector, plans are underway to establish a specialized training institute meeting international standards. The institution will focus on developing highly skilled professionals for port operations.

Administrative reforms and modern infrastructure are expected to strengthen Pakistan’s trade capacity and enhance the competitiveness of its ports as regional commercial hubs.
