Prime Minister’s Task Force for Maritime Reforms: Modernization of PNSC and Karachi Shipyard Accelerated

Islamabad: Implementation of the modernization plans for the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) and Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works (KS&EW) is underway under the Prime Minister’s Task Force for Maritime Reforms, aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s maritime economy.

The government’s reform strategy seeks to enhance the operational capacity of national institutions, promote domestic shipbuilding and reduce the country’s trade deficit.

Third-Party Performance Audit and Reforms at PNSC

An independent third-party performance audit of the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation has been completed to assess its transparency and professional efficiency. Based on the audit findings, several measures are being implemented:

• Implementation of Audit Recommendations: Immediate action is being taken to improve fleet management and financial affairs.
• Priority for Domestic Cargo: A policy is being implemented to route shipping orders from the public and private sectors through the national shipyard.

Karachi Shipyard: Modern Shipbuilding and Green Technology

Karachi Shipyard has been assigned a central role in commercial shipbuilding and the production of modern harbor craft, with the objective of developing vessels that meet international standards.

Key Technical and Strategic Measures

• Environment-Friendly Fuel: Development of modern harbor craft powered by clean energy and biofuel technologies.
• Standardization: Full implementation of recommendations approved by the Standardization Committee to eliminate technical deficiencies.
• Global Joint Ventures: Partnerships with international shipyards to facilitate technology transfer and establish joint ventures.
• Expanded Repair Capacity: Significant expansion of the shipyard’s capacity for commercial shipbuilding and ship repair.

The revival and modernization of PNSC and Karachi Shipyard are expected to strengthen Pakistan’s national shipping industry while significantly expanding the country’s broader Blue Economy.
