Prime Minister’s Maritime Reforms Task Force Delivers Major Improvements at Karachi Port
Karachi — Under the Prime Minister’s Task Force on Maritime Reforms, a significant increase has been recorded in the operational efficiency of the Karachi Port Trust, Customs House, and all major container terminals.
According to the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, these wide-ranging reforms are aimed at modernising the port system, accelerating cargo clearance, and bringing trade facilitation for Pakistan’s imports and exports in line with international standards.
Customs Reforms and Digitalisation of Port Security
Advanced technology and a faceless clearance system have been introduced to speed up commercial activities at the ports.
Modern Customs System: The expansion of the Green Channel, introduction of faceless goods declaration clearance, and implementation of post-clearance audits have made the customs clearance process more transparent and efficient.
Digital Port System: The installation of a Port Community System, modern cargo scanners, and electronic weighbridges has made cargo inspection faster, safer, and more reliable.
Round-the-Clock Operations: The restoration of 24-hour port operations and a significant reduction in port dwell time have enabled the timely clearance of containers.
Modernisation of Container Terminals and Increased Operational Capacity
The latest equipment has been installed at all major maritime terminals to meet the growing requirements of the industrial and commercial sectors.
Most Important Point: The modernisation of Karachi Gateway Terminal, Karachi International Container Terminal, South Asia Pakistan Terminals, and Qasim International Container Terminal has significantly improved container-handling capacity.
National Dredging Plan and Economic Sustainability
National institutions, including the National Logistics Corporation, are playing a key role in the comprehensive development of Pakistan’s maritime sector.
Under the National Dredging Plan, efforts to increase port depth have been accelerated, while dredging work at Port Qasim has been completed.
These coordinated maritime reforms have not only enhanced port efficiency but are also strengthening the national economy by increasing the volume of trade.
