Pilot Officer Rashid Minhas Shaheed: 55th Martyrdom Anniversary Honors an Enduring Legacy of Courage
Islamabad/Karachi: The 55th martyrdom anniversary of Pilot Officer Rashid Minhas Shaheed, the youngest recipient of Pakistan’s highest military award, the Nishan-e-Haider, is being observed with respect and reverence. His extraordinary courage, devotion to duty and ultimate sacrifice for the defense of Pakistan remain an enduring source of inspiration for the Pakistan Air Force and the nation.
Early Life and Joining the Pakistan Air Force
Born in Karachi on February 17, 1951, Rashid Minhas chose a career in aerial defense at a young age. He was commissioned on March 14, 1971, as part of the Pakistan Air Force’s 51st GD(P) Course.
He was subsequently posted to No. 2 Squadron at PAF Base Masroor, Maripur, for his Operational Conversion Course.
August 20, 1971: A Historic Story of Courage in the Skies
On August 20, 1971, Pilot Officer Rashid Minhas took off from Masroor Air Base in a T-33 jet trainer for his first solo training flight.
Hijacking Attempt: During takeoff, Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman reportedly entered the aircraft and took control, attempting to divert it toward India.
Struggle for Control: With the aircraft approaching the Indian border, Rashid Minhas made every possible effort to regain control of the aircraft.
Ultimate Sacrifice: Realizing that the aircraft could not be prevented from crossing the border otherwise, he turned it toward the ground. The aircraft crashed approximately 32 miles before the border, resulting in his martyrdom.
A Sacrifice That Preserved National Honor
Rashid Minhas made the ultimate sacrifice at just 20 years of age, thwarting the attempted diversion of the aircraft and preventing the mission from succeeding.
In recognition of his extraordinary courage and sacrifice, the Government of Pakistan awarded him the Nishan-e-Haider, making him the youngest recipient and the only officer of the Pakistan Air Force to receive the prestigious military honor.
His legacy continues to symbolize courage, duty, patriotism and unwavering commitment to the defense of the country.
