Pakistani Ports to Be Upgraded to International Standards as PM’s Maritime Reforms Task Force Takes Action

Islamabad — To increase Pakistan’s trade volume and accelerate international shipments, the Prime Minister’s Task Force on Maritime Reforms has initiated comprehensive administrative and technical reforms at Pakistani ports. The measures aim to bring port logistics, customs clearance and cargo handling in line with international standards.

24-Hour Operations and Modern Customs Infrastructure

The task force, in collaboration with the National Logistics Cell (NLC) and customs authorities, has developed a practical framework for the digitalization and automation of the port system.

24-Hour Clearance Operations: Inspection centers are being upgraded under customs regulations to enable uninterrupted cargo inspection and clearance around the clock.

Advanced Scanning and Surveillance: High-tech scanners and modern CCTV networks are being introduced at port terminals to make inspections faster, more transparent and efficient.

Accurate Weighing System: Portable weighing scales, regular calibration and expanded high-value cargo areas are being introduced to eliminate operational bottlenecks.

World-Class Maritime Training Institute

To address the shortage of professional expertise in the port sector, a specialized maritime training institute meeting international standards is being established. The institute will provide port workers with regular training on modern equipment, automated loading systems and international logistics protocols.

Surprise Inspections and Transparent Monitoring System

An automated system for annual and surprise inspections of ports, off-dock terminals and customs stations is also being implemented to ensure greater transparency in commercial operations. The initiative is expected to strengthen Pakistan’s export competitiveness and enhance its capacity to collect revenue efficiently.
