Islamabad — August 29, 2026: Pakistan has launched a comprehensive programme to modernize its port infrastructure with advanced technology and digital logistics, aiming to capitalize on its extensive coastline and strategic geographic location.

The government’s reforms seek to ensure faster and more transparent movement of international cargo while positioning Pakistan as a major maritime and transit hub in the region.

Modern Technology and Logistics Reforms at Ports

Advanced measures are being implemented at Karachi, Port Qasim and Gwadar to enhance operational efficiency:

  • Digital customs and single-window system: Faceless customs assessment and port automation are helping reduce cargo clearance times and lower import and export costs.
  • Infrastructure expansion: Deep-sea berth capacity is being expanded, alongside modern dredging systems to facilitate the berthing of large international cargo vessels.
  • Transparent logistics network: Advanced tracking systems are being deployed to connect ports with inland transport corridors and dry ports, improving cargo visibility and supply-chain efficiency.

Blue Economy and Strategic Investment Opportunities

Pakistan’s coastline of more than 1,000 kilometres offers significant opportunities for both domestic and international investors.

Shipbuilding and Ship Recycling

Reviving commercial shipbuilding and ship-recycling activities at local shipyards could help strengthen domestic maritime capacity and reduce reliance on external payments.

Bunkering Services

Modern bunkering facilities at Gwadar and Karachi can provide fuel and related services to vessels operating on international shipping routes, creating new maritime business opportunities.

Expansion of the National Commercial Fleet

Public-private partnerships can support the expansion of Pakistan’s maritime freight sector, increasing the country’s capacity to earn foreign exchange through commercial shipping.

The modernization of Pakistan’s ports, logistics infrastructure and maritime services could play a key role in strengthening the country’s Blue Economy and enhancing its position in regional and international trade.
