Islamabad (Web Desk) — Pakistan has achieved a historic milestone in early debt repayments as a result of the government’s effective economic strategy and strict fiscal discipline. The total volume of debt repaid ahead of schedule has reached nearly Rs6 trillion, which is expected to significantly reduce both external and domestic financial pressures in the coming fiscal years.

Fiscal Discipline and Shift Away from Conventional Practices

According to Finance Minister’s Adviser Khurram Shehzad, Pakistan has so far repaid approximately Rs5,920 billion in debt before its scheduled maturity. He said Pakistan’s debt management has shifted from conventional practices toward a more active and effective financial framework, primarily aimed at strengthening the government’s fiscal position and reducing the growing burden of interest payments.

Key Debt Repayment Figures and Economic Impact

Previous records surpassed: Pakistan has exceeded the previous record of Rs1,133 billion in early debt repayment set in August 2025.

Fiscal Year 2025/26 performance: During fiscal year 2024-25, a total of Rs2,900 billion in debt was reportedly cleared ahead of schedule.

Fiscal Year 2026/27 progress: During the current fiscal year 2026-27, a further Rs1,200 billion in liabilities has so far been repaid ahead of schedule.

Reduction in overall debt burden: These measures are expected to reduce the overall volume of domestic debt while creating additional fiscal space by lowering the heavy debt-servicing costs in future budgets.

The government’s progress is expected to play a key role in strengthening Pakistan’s macroeconomic stability, supporting the value of the rupee, and restoring confidence among international financial institutions.
