Bilawal Bhutto Zardari Warns Against Weaponizing Water Resources
Islamabad: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has warned that the 21st century faces growing risks from the weaponization of water resources and restrictions on shared rivers. Speaking at an international seminar on the Indus Waters Treaty, he urged the international community to develop stronger legal frameworks for protecting transboundary water resources.
Bilawal said that deliberately stopping a country's water supply constitutes an existential threat and should be addressed through all available international forums.
He added that the Indus River is not merely a river but the foundation of an ancient civilization, the livelihood of millions of people, and a cornerstone of Pakistan's economy.
Water Rights and National Interests
The PPP chairman stated that Pakistan would not compromise on its water rights under any circumstances.
He said an effective national defense requires clearly defined red lines, adding that any attempt to cross those limits would carry serious consequences. According to him, Pakistan's defense capabilities exist to deter threats against the country's vital national interests.
