*QUETTA:* Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti said that a free, responsible, and informed press is the cornerstone of any democratic society, highlighting the vital role of journalists in ensuring transparency and keeping the public informed.
He acknowledged that journalists in Balochistan continue to perform their professional duties under difficult and challenging conditions. He paid tribute to more than 40 journalists from the province who lost their lives while performing their duties, terming their sacrifices unforgettable.
CM Bugti said the provincial government would extend full support to make the Siddiq Baloch Media Academy in Quetta fully functional so that journalists can receive modern training, research opportunities, and professional development aligned with evolving media trends.
He stated that the government is taking practical steps to address the issues faced by the journalist community. He added that the seed money for the Journalists Welfare Endowment Fund has been increased to provide financial assistance to journalists and their families in times of need.
He further said efforts are underway to strengthen health insurance coverage, emergency assistance, and financial support mechanisms for media workers.
The chief minister also said progress is being made on the first-ever housing scheme for working journalists in Balochistan, adding that the government is committed to its timely completion.
He added that Balochistan’s first digital media policy has been approved to promote digital platforms while supporting credible print and electronic media institutions.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment, he said press freedom, journalist protection, and professional independence would be ensured, stressing that a strong and responsible media is essential for a progressive society.
