Acid Attack on Dr. Mah Noor Nisar: A Dark Stain on Baloch Traditions

The land of Balochistan has long been known for its traditions of bravery, tolerance, hospitality, and respect for human dignity. For generations, its people have upheld values of honor, compassion, and social responsibility. Unfortunately, in recent years, certain incidents have emerged that have not only tarnished these proud traditions but have also caused deep pain and concern across society. The tragic acid attack on Dr. Mah Noor Nisar while she was performing her duties at Civil Hospital Quetta is one such incident that has shaken the conscience of every civilized person.

Dr. Mah Noor Nisar, a dedicated medical professional committed to saving lives and serving humanity, became the victim of a brutal and cowardly act. An attack on a doctor who spends her days caring for patients is not merely an attack on an individual; it is an assault on the moral foundations of society itself. Such an act represents cruelty, intolerance, and a complete disregard for human values. It deserves the strongest possible condemnation.

Dr. Mah Noor Nisar belongs to a respected and honorable family. Her father, Habibullah Nisar, is widely known in his community for his integrity, kindness, and service to others. Having been a valued member of the neighborhood for decades, he has always stood by people in times of need and earned respect through his character and conduct. The suffering inflicted upon his daughter is therefore not only a tragedy for the family but also a collective sorrow for the people of Balochistan.

Amid this heartbreaking incident, the courage and humanity displayed by Abdul Razzaq Tareen deserve special recognition. By putting his own safety at risk to assist Dr. Mah Noor immediately after the attack, he demonstrated exceptional bravery and compassion. His actions serve as a powerful reminder that even in the darkest moments, humanity and selflessness continue to exist. Individuals like him are a source of pride for society and role models for future generations.

The prompt response by Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti, the Health Department, the Balochistan Police, and SHO Civil Lines Jawad Hussain is also commendable. Their swift actions in ensuring emergency medical treatment and arranging the transfer of Dr. Mah Noor to Karachi for specialized care played an important role in addressing the crisis. Such timely interventions strengthen public confidence in state institutions and demonstrate the importance of responsive governance during emergencies.

However, this tragic incident raises a broader and more troubling question: How long will women—including doctors, teachers, and other hardworking professionals—continue to face violence and harassment? How long will acid attacks, gender-based violence, and other brutal crimes continue to stain our society? This is not solely a law enforcement issue; it is a collective responsibility that concerns every member of society.

There is an urgent need to ensure that those responsible for such heinous crimes are brought to justice and face the strictest legal consequences. The swift police action in this case sends an important message that violence against women is an unforgivable crime and that perpetrators will not be granted any leniency. Such individuals must be made examples of through both legal accountability and social condemnation so that others are deterred from committing similar acts.

At the same time, we must remember that daughters and sisters are not merely the responsibility of their own families; they are a shared trust of the entire society. If we remain silent today, similar tragedies may strike another household tomorrow. The attack on Dr. Mah Noor Nisar is a test of our collective conscience. It calls upon all of us to stand united against injustice, support the cause of justice, and work toward building a society where every woman feels safe, respected, and empowered.

May Almighty Allah grant Dr. Mah Noor Nisar a complete and speedy recovery and bless her family with patience, strength, and perseverance during this difficult time. Ameen.
