27th Martyrdom Anniversary of Kargil Hero Havaldar Lalak Jan (Nishan-e-Haider) Observed

Islamabad — Pakistan is commemorating the 27th martyrdom anniversary of Havaldar Lalak Jan Shaheed (Nishan-e-Haider), one of the country's most decorated military heroes, in recognition of his courage and sacrifice during the 1999 Kargil conflict.

Serving with the Northern Light Infantry (NLI), Havaldar Lalak Jan is remembered for his steadfast defense of Qadir Post, where he displayed exceptional bravery under intense combat conditions.

Extraordinary Courage on the Frontline

According to historical accounts:

• Volunteered for Frontline Duty: In May 1999, Havaldar Lalak Jan volunteered to serve at forward positions during the Kargil conflict.
• Defended Strategic Positions: Alongside a small group of fellow soldiers, he successfully defended his post against repeated attacks.
• Counterattack on 12 June 1999: He led a determined counteroffensive that forced opposing forces to retreat.
• Fought Until the End: On 7 July 1999, despite sustaining serious injuries during a major assault, he continued fighting until he was martyred while defending his position.

For his exceptional gallantry, he was posthumously awarded the Nishan-e-Haider, Pakistan's highest military decoration for valor.

Family Pays Tribute

Speaking on the occasion, members of Havaldar Lalak Jan's family described his sacrifice as a lasting source of pride.

His son, Tariq Lalak Jan, said that serving and sacrificing for the country's defense is a matter of honor for their family. His brother and friends also remembered him as a courageous, humble, and dedicated soldier whose legacy continues to inspire future generations.

Nationwide Tributes

Special prayers and Quran recitations were held in mosques across Pakistan in memory of the fallen hero. Religious scholars and citizens paid tribute to his sacrifice, describing it as a symbol of patriotism, courage, and devotion to national service.
